Escape and the Outdoors
Today the pups were 4 weeks old. Darla and Spanky both managed at different times during the day to get out of the nest box. Of course getting out, created the problem of getting back in, so I provided a 2x4 for them as an outside step to help them get back in. They are mobile enough now that they tend to treat Lorelei, the chow wagon, as a target of opportunity.
I set up an X-pen in the front yard and took them outside in the sun for a few hours. It was about 15 minutes before they got over the newness of being outside, and they were inspecting the new environment. Largo was the boldest, almost fearlessly poking around. Darla was more cautious, hesitantly exploring with her growl. Spanky was almost as quick as Largo with his inspection, but giving voice to his uncertainty while he did it. Gruff was content trying to roll over in the grass and crude attempts to hop. I caught Darla trying to get into the play down position. I'm don't know what she was trying to play with, but she sure was trying to practice the position. Spanky found some excuse to try running forward and barking. They are amusing to watch, since they are so clumsy. The next time I take them out, I'll have the camera with me.
